Half Fisherman’s Rib Slipover Vest Knitting Pattern | Haven Harbor

This pattern is included in my Timeless Return knitting collection, available for sale on Amazon. See more information about the collection HERE.

The Haven Harbor Slipover Vest is worked seamlessly from the top down. The collar is knit in the round in half fisherman’s rib, then transitions directly into the shoulders. Shoulder width is shaped with steep increases. Once the shoulders are established, the front and back are separated and worked flat to form the armhole depth, with subtle decreases along the edges for a refined, sculpted shape. The front and back are then joined and worked in the round for the body. The armholes are finished with a clean i-cord edge, adding polish to the textured fabric. The length of both the body and armholes can be easily adjusted to suit your preferred fit.

Needles

Size 3.5 mm (US4) circular knitting needles in the following lengths:

  • 16 in/40 cm for the collar

  • 24 in/60 cm for the armhole i-cord edging

  • 32 in/80 cm or 40 in/100 cm for the yoke and body

Or knitting needles required to obtain correct gauge.

Notions

  • tape measure

  • 4 stitch markers (1 of a different color to denote BOR)

  • tapestry needle

  • waste yarn

  • scissors

Gauge

18 STS + 20 rows/rounds = 4 in/10 cm on main body needle in half fisherman’s rib stitch blocked.

Half Fisherman’s Rib Stitch (Flat)
CO an odd number of STS.
Row 1 (WS): K to end.
Row 2 (RS): P1, *K1B, P1; repeat from * to end.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until desired length.

Please note that stitch gauge is measured by counting the visible knit and purl stitch columns across 4 in/10 cm, and row gauge is measured by counting the visible rows (each formed by two knitted rows) over 4 in/10 cm. If your gauge differs when working flat vs. in the round, adjust needle size as needed to match the pattern gauge.

The construction of this vest is similar to the construction of my Woodland Pullover with how shoulder increases are worked and how the front and back are worked separately and then re-joined. If you want to visually see how the overall construction works with knitting steep increases for the shoulders, knitting the front and backs, and then joining the work back together, feel free to check out my Woodland Pullover Tutorial.
