CROCHET | How to Chain (CH)

Crochet How to Chain a tutorial by Ashley Lillis

The crochet chain (abbreviated CH) is the very first step in nearly every crochet project — from scarves and blankets to hats and amigurumi. It’s a simple, rhythmic motion that creates a foundation of linked loops, and once you’ve learned it, you’ll see it everywhere in crochet patterns. At first it might feel a little awkward or loose, but with a tiny bit of practice you’ll find a comfortable rhythm and a consistent tension that sets your whole project up for success.

How to crochet the chain (CH) stitch

1. Start with a slip knot around your hook.
2. Yarn over and pull through loop.
