Knit A Simple Drop Shoulder Heart Cardigan

Knit an easy chunky heart sweater with this free pattern and step by step video tutorial. The Grateful Heart Short-Sleeve Cardigan is a top-down, drop-shoulder open cardigan sweater. You cast on STS for the back, work to the armhole depth, then pick up and knit stitches for the left and right fronts. The fronts are joined to the back and then the body is knit back and forth in one piece and finished with ribbing. Body length can be easily altered since it’s knit from the top down. Collar and sleeve ribbing stitches are picked up and knit. The cardigan is finished with a heart worked in duplicate stitch in a contrasting color.

Size Guide + Finished Measurements

There are 5 sizes available written in 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) with a finished circumference of 49 (52.5, 58, 63.5, 68.5) in/122.5 (131.5, 145, 159, 171.5) cm.  Please reference the table for bust range and suggested size and circumference.  Cardigan is meant to be very oversized.  Sweater pictured is a size 2 on a 36 in/91.5 cm bust.  Yarn

I used just over 2 skeins of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick + Quick yarn (223 yds/204 m per 12oz/340g skein) for a size 2 sweater knit on 9mm (US 13) needles.  You can estimate yardage based on your gauge swatch and calculate overall square inches or centimeters.

Needles

Size 10mm (US15) 40 in/100 cm circular knitting needles for body
Size 9mm (US13) 16 in/40 cm circular knitting needles for sleeve ribbing
Size 9mm (US 13) 40 in/100 cm circular knitting needles for body and collar ribbing
Or knitting needles required to obtain correct gauge.

Yarn

Approximately 450 (510, 602, 693, 796) yds/411 (467, 550, 633, 727) m or 5 (5, 6, 7, 8) skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Yarn (solids are 106 yds/97 m per 6 oz/170g skein; 80% acrylic, 20% wool) or any other super bulky yarn that meets gauge.  Please note that different colorways have different yardage in this yarn. You will also need approximately 4 yds/3.5 m of a contrasting color yarn in the same weight for the heart. Colors shown are Fisherman and Cranberry.
