What is Test Knitting and Why Should You Try it?

Test knitting is a behind-the-scenes part of designing knitwear that gives makers a chance to try a pattern before it’s finalized — but it’s so much more than that. It’s an opportunity to deepen your skills, see how patterns are written, troubleshoot real-world instructions, and be part of the creative process that helps designers refine their work. Whether you’re an experienced knitwear maker or a confident beginner, test knitting offers valuable insight into how a pattern behaves on real needles and real hands.

Joining a test knit can sharpen your understanding of stitch patterns and shaping, introduce you to new techniques, and connect you with a community of other makers who care about craftsmanship and support one another. It’s a chance to knit something exciting before it’s released, contribute feedback that matters, and feel more confident as both a knitter and a maker. If you’ve ever wondered how your favorite patterns become polished and ready for publication, test knitting is the experience that brings that process to life.

The Test Knit Process

While every designer runs their test knits a bit differently, here is the general process for participating in a test knit:

  1. A designer puts out a call for testers typically on social media, via email, or on another website listing the specific requirements for testing.

  2. Testers apply to test knit, answering any questions that might be helpful for the designer and agreeing to the requirements.

  3. If chosen, the tester will receive a copy of the pattern, and then begin making the item.

  4. The tester will ask any clarifying questions, make suggestions, and note errors along the way. This can be done via Facebook or Instagram groups, Google Docs, or any other communication platform.

  5. The tester completes the item in the specified timeframe and provides any other formal feedback the designer requires.

  6. The tester helps promote the item on release day and receives recognition from the designer for their efforts.
