Mid-December Knit Cowl Pattern (Free)
This cozy cowl is a versatile winter accessory that’s easy to make and looks great with everything. It uses a textured knit and purl stitch combination that’s reversible, so either side can be worn facing out. You can knit it in the round for a seamless finish or flat and seam the ends later — whichever you prefer.
You’ll love this pattern whether you’re looking for a quick project to work up on chilly evenings or a handmade gift to share.
Why You’ll Love It
Two Yarn Options
Use two strands of worsted-weight yarn held together to create a rich, cozy texture, or switch to a single strand of super bulky weight yarn for a chunkier, quicker finish.
Knit in the Round or Flat
Whether you prefer circular needles or straight needles, this pattern works with both.
In the round: Seamless and easy.
Flat: Traditional and familiar — finished with a seam.
Reversible Texture
The simple knit-and-purl stitch combination creates a reversible fabric that looks great from every angle.
Customizable Fit
You can easily adjust the height and circumference by adding or reducing pattern repeats or cast-on stitches.

CO 56 sts and join in the round, marking the beginning/end of the row.
Row 1: [K2, P2] to the end of the round. (If you change the number of CO sts, make sure it’s divisible by 4 so you end a row in P2.)

Repeat Rows 1–3 seven more times.
Next row, BO and weave in ends.
